They may be some of the newest faces on the dining block of Adelaide, but local favourite Gang Gang Co. has cemented themselves to be one of the most attractive and delicious burger joints that regularly makes an appearance across markets, events, and the general community over the last year or so.
A collaborative effort by Nina Hadinata and Morgen Wynn, Gang Gang Co. offers their customers with a contemporary fusion of flavours from Asia and the Americas, thereby replicating their love and passion for travelling and gourmet cuisine through their well-established business. Delivering a range of burger options that have been cheekily named after some of the greatest pop culture icons, the burgers at Gang Gang Co. aim to inject a sense of personality and uniqueness to each of them and in the process, take your tastebuds on a fun adventure!
In anticipation of their appearance at the upcoming Gathered SA Markets next weekend (March 30 + 31), I was fortunate enough to conduct an interview with Nina and Morgen via Jenna O’Dell (owner of Gathered SA) – have a read of our exchange below:
Tema: Can you please tell us a bit about yourselves, Nina and Morgen?
Nina: I moved to Adelaide from Los Angeles around 2 years ago now. In a transitional stage of my life, I turned to creating a menu which was a collaboration between LA and my home Indonesia.
Morgen: I’m a local Adelaide gal. I’ve been a DJ most of my adult life, but since 2018, have transitioned to growing our business Gang Gang with my partner Nin.
Tema: How did you come up with the name of your business?
Nina & Morgen: “GANG” means small street in Indonesian and “GANG” also means group of friends. This explains our dynamic and our values for the business perfectly. It stuck as soon as we said it!
Tema: How long have you been running Gang Gang Co. for? How have you found the journey of your business so far?
Nina & Morgen: We started our journey in January 2018 and it’s been one hell of a ride! We feel very blessed to have had the response and support that we have from our Adelaide crew!
Tema: What would you say about Gang Gang Co. to someone who may not have heard of you before? What do they need to know about your business, straight away?
Nina & Morgen: We serve delicious burgers and love to have a good chat! (Also don’t mind telling a joke or two!)
Tema: How did you decide on what to name your eclectic selection of meals?
Nina & Morgen: We just had fun with it, referring to pop culture references.
Tema: How did you decide on what to offer on your menu?
Nina & Morgen: We wanted to combine flavors from LA and Asia. Burgers are only the beginning – we ultimately want to be a one stop shop for all your comfort food needs.
Tema: What would you say is your most top-selling meal?
Nina & Morgen: The Cardi B is definitely the top selling meal! It’s a perfect mixture of crispy chicken, avocado and Balinese salsa.
Tema: What would you say is your top-recommended meal?
Nina & Morgen: The Spice Girl is our personal favorite. Its our Japanese-inspired cheese burger. Think Marinated beef patty, mild wasabi mayo, slaw and pickled ginger.
Tema: Do you have a physical shopfront? If not, where do you regularly make appearances?
Nina & Morgen: We don’t have one just yet, but hopefully, that will change very soon. You can find us regularly at Plant 4 Bowden and at Gilles at the Grounds. We are also going to be at Tasting Australia next month, as well as joining Veganpalooza to launch our new Plant Based Burger Menu.
Tema: How did you get involved with Gathered SA?
Nina & Morgen: We have been chatting to Jenna from the beginning of last year, but our dates kept clashing. 2019 has luckily worked out for both parties and we are very excited to be a part of the Gathered SA Markets next weekend!
Tema: What do you hope for your customers to experience, when they purchase a meal from Gang Gang Co.?
Nina & Morgen: We want our customers to feel welcome, excited, happy and satisfied with the whole Gang Gang experience. We pride ourselves on meals that are delicious and tasty, but not overwhelming! We want our Gang to feel full, but not left feeling bloated or heavy.
Tema: What do you think is rewarding about being a small scale business in SA?
Nina & Morgen: We think SA has a really good thing going on with supporting other local businesses. It’s great to see everyone collaborate and really work together.
Tema: What do you think may be challenging about being a small scale business in SA?
Nina & Morgen: I guess we are still somewhat a new business and we started this from zero. That can take a toll when applying for things or not having a solid backing behind us, but we believe in honest hard work paying off and it’s starting to show.
Tema: What do you think helps your business stand out from the rest?
Nina & Morgen: Taking an already saturated market and giving the customer that bit more of an experience. Creating all our sauces from scratch and not using any over processed foods! I guess the bright yellow food trailer stands out too!
Tema: Is there anything else that you’d like our readers and your customers to know about Gang Gang?
Nina & Morgen: Some might not know but we also cater to functions and weddings which we absolutely love. Be sure to keep an eye out on our socials to find our next location. We are popping up all around SA wineries, events, and festivals.
