If you have visited Gathered Design Market – either virtually or in person – you would have undoubtedly come across a certain stall of beautiful silk scarves that are brilliantly stained in flower-extracted dyes and present with a unique sense of elegance. Garden to Gallery‘s scarves are versatile and can be worn rain, hail, or shine. Boasting of the luxurious natural fibre of silk, the scarves and accessories offered by Garden to Gallery are the perfect example of ‘wearable art’.
With the markets returning back to their physical form at the grand Queen’s Theatre on October 24 and 25, 2020, I was fortunate to catch up with owner Jenni about what customers can expect from their participation:
Tema: How are things going for you since we last spoke, Jenni?
Jenni: Remarkably well. I continue to be excited by the colours I find in nature & the amazing hues they can impart to my silk scarves.
Tema: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your business and what ways did you employ to adapt to this modified lifestyle of conducting your business in this uncertain climate?
Jenni: The onset of COVID-19 & the cancellation of markets pushed me to start an online store, thankfully I had the help of my wonderful daughter. I am enjoying the challenge of photographing my scarves for the online store.
Tema: Who would you say is your target audience for your beautiful scarves and accessories?
Jenni: I can’t say there is a particular demographic. Really anyone who appreciates beautiful colours & the sensuous feel of silk will be drawn to my scarves. So often the scarves seem to choose their owner. I do find that the wraps are popular in Spring and Summer. They are so handy on cool nights. Each scarf is unique. Even though they are impossible to repeat I will try to produce something similar if a different size is required.
Tema: What do you think helps your products stand out from the rest who may be in the similar industry of fashion and accessories?
Jenni: Many comment on the softness of the colours. Even the bright scarves have a gentleness to them. Growing most of the plants & flowers in my own garden from which I extract dyes to colour my scarves with appeals to my customers.
Tema: How long have you been part of the Gathered SA family for and what has the experience been like so far?
Jenni: It feels like I have always been a part of the Gathered family, such a perfect description of this market. Actually I have only been taking part for about 3 years. I love every Gathered market I attend, such a positive friendly vibe.
Tema: How did you find the virtual markets hosted by Gathered these past few months?
Jenni: I am so looking forward to this market. It will be wonderful to meet new customer & to catch up with those I have met before. I love talking to people about my product & the way I create the scarves. I also enjoy seeing my scarves on different people & the look on their faces when they fall in love with a scarf!
Tema: What are you anticipating from your participation in the upcoming Gathered SA market? What are some new products that you might be showcasing at this market?
Jenni: I continue to seek out new plant material from which to craft my dyes & experiment with new techniques so there are always new shades & designs.
Garden To Gallery will be participating in the upcoming Gathered Design Market at the Queens Theatre on October 24 + 25, 2020.
